What can I do to keep my Xbox 360 from overheating?

After about 10 minutes of play, my Xbox overheats. (The two red lights on the Ring of Light) I have tried just about everything on the Xbox website and online game forums. My Xbox is no longer under warranty and I cannot afford the repair. Any suggestions or cheap repair options would be great. Thanks! What can I do to keep my Xbox 360 from overheating?
Is the fan workn?

If it is overheating that often, then the fan is broken, a bunch of dust is in there, or something else is going coo-coo.

First make sure fan is workn? If so, make sure you got lots of space around the xbox, 6" on all sides and have it in the lay down postion, not up right.

You could also aim a big box fan onto it, it keeps it a tad cooler like that.

I suggest that since the warranty is up, you read a how-to on how to take the xbox apart, and just vacuum it out, remove all dust. and see if the fan is spinning (you should tell even without taking it apart)

If it still overheats, then you need to read a how-to on how to put more heatsink compound on the CPU and GPU, most likely that will fix your issue.

It is true you can brake your xbox but only if you do something dumb. Taking out a GPU and CPU heatsink is really easy :)

And the best part is, the heatsink paste is like 2.99$ at any computer store, pretty dang cheap fix.

If you need the screwdrivers, add another 5$ for parts. In all you need 2 sizes, and a butter knife :)

IF anyone is having a problem of overheating. Do not fix it by yourself. File a complaint with the federal trade commission.

If you havent tried the towel trick, I suggest that you unplug your 360, and leave it on a surface like a bed or a couch for at least 40 minutes. After this (towel trick) wrap it in about 3-4 towels and make sure the 360 is completely covered. Leave it that way for about 20 minutes. After that plug back up your 360 and see if it works. If it doesn't work after that, go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsz0lNJ6J鈥?/a> and do as it says in the video. My friends have used it and it works excellent after you do it.

I hope this helps :)What can I do to keep my Xbox 360 from overheating?
keep it out in the open, and you can also buy a fan that attaches to the back but BE CAREFULL because when you try to take them off, some of them break your xbox. and you should call microsoft. i play for hours and my xbox is perfectly fine, in a tiny little cabinet.
stand your xbox up聽 keep it in a wide space isolated to dnt keep it on for hours dnt try to fix it yourself it makes it worst you tube is the main place given out bad advice and one more thing dnt buy a ps3 its not worth it my xbox never broke i had it since 2007
The most simple thing you can do is keep the top clear.
Keep it in an open area, so nothing near it heats it up. Don't try to put it put it where people step on it.
You always have to keep it ventilated. Make sure there is nothing around it and for at least 2 feet behind.
Try putting a small fan behind it so it blows on it to further cool it.
sell it and buy a ps3
